Bien vivre au-delà du "périph" : les compromis des classes moyennes

International audienceThis article focuses on urban spaces which get very little scrutiny although they are quite numerous: the " mixed middle spaces, " which often attract more analysis now that they are being gentrified. However, in certain neighborhoods of the suburbs nearest Paris, including some disqualified neighborhoods, what can be observed is the same sort of social transformation being exhibited in certain central areas but which engages all together and at the same time, the inhabitants, the discussions and practices which usually get little attention in French urban sociological studies. Beginning with the qualitative studies carried out in Fontenay sous Bois, the author questions the residential movements of inhabitants of ordinary neighborhoods, as well as their relationship to their surroundings. Beyond a social label which tends to reduce these suburbians to being captives in an identical destiny, the spectrum of residential movements is quite varied, as are their practices of their milieu, which allow them on a daily basis to navigate social distances and connections.Cet article centre son attention sur des espaces urbains peu auscultés alors même qu'ils sont les plus nombreux : les « espaces moyens mélangés », le plus souvent analysés en tant qu'ils se « gentrifient ». Or, dans certains quartiers de la proche banlieue parisienne, y compris des quartiers disqualifiés, on observe le même mouvement de transformation sociale que dans certains quartiers centraux, mais qui met en jeu tout à la fois des habitants, des discours et des pratiques peu décrits dans la sociologie urbaine française. A partir d'une enquête qualitative effectuée à Fontenay sous Bois, l'auteure interroge les itinéraires résidentiels de ces habitants de quartiers ordinaires, ainsi que leurs rapports aux territoires. Au delà d'une étiquette sociale renvoyant les banlieusards à des destins captifs et uniformes, l'éventail des itinéraires résidentiels est varié, tout comme les pratiques des territoires qui permettent de négocier, au quotidien, distances et appartenances sociales
